Cizer

Cizer

The commune is situated at the south-western limits of the county, it occupies the marginal zone of the contact point between the Crasna Basin and the laminated horst of the Meses Mountains, inclusive the Magura Priei peak (997 m - the highest point in Salaj county). It is situated in the hydrographical basins of the Crasna River and the Crisul Repede River and its total surface is 71,23 square kms. The commune constitutes of three villages: Cizer, the central village, situated at 35 kms distance from Zalau city, Plesca and Pria.

The total population of the commune, according to the last census, counts 2467 inhabitants, of which 90,02% are Romanians, 0,04% Hungarians, 9,8% Roms and 0,14% are other nationalities. The number of the inhabitants is rapidly decreasing, since the census of the year 1966 the population has halved.

Cizer village was first mentioned in written documents in 1219, when its name was terra Cezar. The other villages were attested a few years later, Plesca in 1471 and Pria in 1481.

The economy of the commune is prevalent agricultural, based on cultivation of plants and livestock-breeding. Approx. 26% of its total surface is occupied by forests, and this fact made possible the developement of the small industry based on conversion of timber.

The touristic fond of Cizer commune is characterized by the richness of natural and anthropical sights. The natural fond is represented by the regions of the Meses Mountains, by the picturesque scenery of the Poicu, Pria and Crasna valleys, by the harmony between the vegetation and the relief and last but not least by the exceptional fauna. The most important touristical attraction of the commune, the wooden church "Sfantul Nicolae" in Cizer (1772) has a historical value: it was built by a group of carpenters lead by Horea, the symbol of the Romanian people from Transylvania, and it was removed to the park of the Ethnographical Museum in Cluj-Napoca. The objects exhibited in the "village museum" in Cizer (placed in a wooden house built in 1780, now architectural monument), the folklore and the ancestral traditions of the Romanian inhabitants contribute to the touristic attraction of the commune. The son of this commune is Victor Gaga, the famous Romanian sculptor.
